Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh
These states share the same bigha: 2,025 square metres, which works out to 4.94 bigha per hectare. A bigha here divides into 20 biswa, so part-plots are often quoted in biswa rather than as a fraction.
The conversion matters because portals like UP Bhulekh store holdings in hectares while farmers know their land in bigha. Subsidy and loan applications often ask for one unit when the record shows the other.
Rajasthan has two bighas
This catches people out. Rajasthan distinguishes pakka from kachha bigha, and they are not the same size. Official records use pakka bigha at 2,529.28 square metres, giving 3.95 to the hectare.
Kachha bigha still appears in informal dealings and older conversation. If a figure does not reconcile with the record, a mix-up between the two is a likely explanation — so confirm which one a quoted area refers to.
Assam and West Bengal
The eastern bigha is far smaller — 674 square metres, about a third of the UP version. That puts 14.83 bigha in a hectare.
The gap is large enough to cause real confusion. Ten bigha in Assam is closer to 0.67 hectare, while ten bigha in UP is over 2 hectares. Anyone comparing land across these states needs to be explicit about which bigha is meant.
Why bigha varies at all
Bigha predates any national standard. Regions settled on their own sizes, often tied to local practice, and those sizes stayed put when the metric system arrived. Hectares were layered on top for official records rather than replacing bigha in daily use.
This is why there is no single hectare-to-bigha number, and why any site quoting one without naming a state is giving an incomplete answer. Pick your state in the calculator above before relying on a figure.
