Reading a hectare figure in dismil
Land records increasingly store area in hectares, but most conversations about buying, selling or inheriting a plot still happen in dismil. Converting lets you check a digitised record against what your family has always called the same piece of land.
The factor is 247.105. It looks arbitrary until you see where it comes from: one hectare is 2.47105 acres, and one acre is exactly 100 dismil.
A quick way to estimate
Take the hectare figure, multiply by 250, then shave off about one percent. For 0.4 hectare that gives roughly 100 dismil, and the exact answer is 98.8. Close enough to catch a misplaced decimal point before it causes trouble.
Dismil and decimal are the same unit
The spelling changes with the state; the size does not. One dismil is one hundredth of an acre — about 40 square metres — whether the paperwork calls it dismil or decimal. Bihar tends toward dismil, West Bengal toward decimal, and Jharkhand uses both, sometimes in the same office.
This matters when comparing documents from different states. Seeing two spellings does not mean you are looking at two different measurements.
Why dismil holds on
Scale. A hectare is large relative to the plots that actually change hands in these states, so areas end up written as 0.03 or 0.045 hectare — hard to picture and easy to mistype. The same plots are 7.4 and 11.1 dismil, which people can hold in their heads and compare at a glance.
Precision worth keeping
Results here carry several decimal places on purpose. Rounding 29.65 dismil down to 29 discards close to 26 square metres, and on a larger holding those trimmed fractions add up. Keep the precision when the number is going onto a form.
